Sofia, 7 June, 2011 - Holcim Bulgaria won a special prize in a competition for green businesses organized by the Bulgarian Ministry of Environment and Waters within the Green Bulgaria campaign.
The campaign is financed by the Operational Program “Environment”. It was launched last month with the objective to promote the understanding that we are a part of nature and in order to live in harmony with it, we are the ones that need to take care of it. Awards are given in three categories: for greenest business company, greenest town/city and most active municipality.
The competition attracted submissions from 80 business companies. The jury, composed of green-minded experts and celebrities, awarded 12 of them at a celebration for the World Environment Day, 5 June, held yesterday.
The prize recognizes two aspects of our green policy and initiatives - the efforts to restore eco-systems and biodiversity in the old, worked-out quarries of the Pleven plant and the greening and landscaping of Beli Izvor plant.
In line with our corporate standards and commitments we developed and started implementing Biodiversity plans for the old limestone and marl quarries, operated by Pleven cement plant , situated in areas that fall within the NATURA 2000 network. The initiative is not required by Bulgarian law but is considered a good and innovative practice by Holcim standards of eco-conservation and resposible business practices.
